Poison dart frogs, a member of the Dendrobatidae family, live in the northern part of South America and southern Central America, ranging Costa Rica to Brazil in their natural habitat. They are brightly colored frogs about 2.5-5cm or 1-2in in length, but are among the most poisonous animals in the world.
Indigenous peoples of South and Central America used the poisons secreted by the frogs to coat arrows. The Fire-bellied Snake is the only predator of these frogs, as it has developed an immunity to their venom.
Poison dart frogs live 3-15 years in the wild, but their status is threatened.
